Quick answer
  • Start with the skills and set bonuses available to your character, then choose for the obstacle you want to clear. There is no verified patch 1.0.2a winner across equal gear and progression.
  • Poison Hunter, Cold Sorcerer, Hundred Hands Monk and Thorns or Half Moon Warrior are routes to consider, not a verified ranking.

Pick a route you can assemble

Choose a build around an attack and a real equipment payoff. Patch 1.0.2 improved Poisoned for Hunter, Ice Shards and Frozen Barrage for Sorcerer, and Hundred Hands for Monk. Warrior’s Harvest Moon also had a collision bug fixed, which is a correction rather than a simple buff. A route built around an old bug is a different proposition from one built around a supported set bonus.

Build directions and their main commitment
RouteWhy consider itCheck before committing
Poison HunterVenom Bolt, Poison Trap and Poisoned received improvements in 1.0.2.Choose attacks and bonuses that serve Poison; do not assume old Venomfang numbers still apply.
Cold SorcererIce Shards and Frozen Barrage received targeted buffs. The four-piece and six-piece bonuses are different breakpoints; owning one rune does not give both.
Hundred Hands MonkFurious Fist can trigger Golden Palms through the six-piece set effect. The set payoff depends on the six-piece bonus, and its damage now scales with current Mana.
Thorns or Half Moon WarriorPlayers describe both as progression routes, with equipment and enemy type changing the choice.A successful Thorns example may rely on specific gear; Half Moon changes need the updated Harvest Moon rules.

Change the piece that is failing

A build can kill ordinary packs and still be wrong for the next obstacle. In a Warrior discussion, one player recommended Half Moon only with a legendary ring; another found it useful without that ring when ranged enemies became awkward. Treat that disagreement as a reason to try your available attack, rather than waiting indefinitely for an item someone else called mandatory.

Survival is a separate problem. A Thorns player reported dying when several enemies exploded after death. Replies suggested ranged attacks or more health and magic resistance. Adding another damage bonus would not automatically fix that pattern. If several kills create the danger, inspect what happens after the kills as well as the size of your damage numbers.

Check these two post-patch traps

For Hunter, Frost Trap advice is out of date: it became Arcane Trap in 1.0.2, and hotfix 1.0.2a says it applies Dizzy. Do not silently treat that as the Monk status Dazed. For Cold Sorcerer, 1.0.2a separates reduced stun/root duration from the status remaining for effects such as the bonus critical chance against Frozen targets. A shorter immobilization is not, by itself, proof that the offensive interaction stopped.

Make a useful comparison on your own character

Our recommendation is to keep the stage and equipment budget steady while you try a change. Note repeated clears, deaths, completion time and resource use. Change one main piece at a time so that you know whether the new attack, item or defensive adjustment helped. A single large critical hit is a poor substitute for several reliable clears.

The Training Grounds meter added in 1.0.1 shows Damage Overall and Current DPS against the dummy. It is useful for a controlled damage check, but it does not expose the survival problems of a live boss or an enemy pack. Use it alongside repeat clears, not as your only reason to rebuild.
