Quick answer
  • Build around skills you can use now and bonuses your gear actually supports. Do not copy a finished endgame setup that depends on later skills or a full set.
  • When progress stops, check your weapon, loot filter, Health potion and mana supply before changing every talent point.

Make the starter build internally consistent

A level-20 progression discussion recommends using the inventory Details panel to see which damage bonuses the equipment actually supplies. That is a sensible starting point: a good-looking skill choice gains little from a pile of unrelated bonuses.

You do not need one fixed build for an entire playthrough. Choose a main attack or damage plan, then address the sustain needed to keep it running and reassess when a meaningful item or skill becomes available. Avoid spending every resource to imitate gear you have not found.

Early approaches players actually describe

Starter directions from release-era discussion
ClassEarly direction to considerDependency to watch
WarriorA focused direct-damage setup, or Thorns when the supporting equipment is presentDo not assume a rare Thorns item or later hook skill is available immediately.
SorcererPlayers suggest early Cold skills as a route before a later Lightning setupThe discussion specifically warns that “just play Lightning” does not solve the early levels.
HunterBasic/Strong/All Damage and Dexterity while choosing a later damage specializationCheck mana and survivability instead of chasing only one advertised damage number.
MonkPlayers suggest recovery, attack support and defensive investment for early boss wallsA guide’s skill names or gear can depend on unlocks you have not reached.

These are starting directions, not a tested class tier list. A claim that one class is “100 times easier” in a comment is opinion, not a benchmark worth building your character choice around.

Four checks before you respec

Inspect your weakest equipment slot

An old weapon can remain the bottleneck even when several armor pieces are legendary.

Review the loot filter

Keep the rarities that can still upgrade you. A player using a common bow progressed after stopping the automatic sale of uncommon items.

Check sustain during a whole fight

Watch for empty Mana, lost recovery or a Health potion that is no longer adequate for the encounter.

Make one coherent change

Test the effect on a safe repeated stage, then try the boss again. Changing every variable hides the reason a setup improved.

A legendary is a possible direction, not an obligation

Warrior players describe a Thorns build becoming stronger with specific supporting armor, but others in the same thread still struggle with it. That is a good reason to check your whole setup before switching simply because one legendary dropped. Its special effect can matter more than its color, and missing support can matter more than its name.

Keep a useful alternative while trying a new direction. The point of a starter build is to reach the next dependable farm, not to force an endgame item checklist into the first few hours.

Use the previous reliable stage deliberately

The level-20 thread advises returning to an earlier boss for equipment when the next boss cannot be beaten. Decide what you want to improve before doing so: the weapon slot, recovery, relevant damage bonuses or a progression service. “Leave it running longer” is less useful than knowing what an upgrade should fix.

Check after a few runs that the loop is actually stable and that useful loot is being kept. A single lucky clear is not enough to trust a long unattended session.
